Man beaten to death at Gorakhpur residence, 2 held

Two men were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly brutally assaulting their 22-year-old friend, Anup Kumar Sharma, to death at his Gorakhpur residence the previous night.

The two accused, Shani Singh and Mudit Pandey, went to Sharma, who had returned to the city from Mumbai only four days ago, to demand money from him, SP-city Krishna Kumar Bishnoi said. After a brief heated exchange of words, around six men attacked Sharma with hockey sticks and iron rods, leading to his death on the spot, the police officer added.

Despite a complaint by the victim's parents to the police, no immediate action was reportedly taken. Meanwhile, a video of the crime allegedly filmed by a neighbour has gone viral on social media.

ADG Zone Akhil Kumar took cognizance of the video footage on Tuesday and conducted an inspection and directed the police personnel to arrest the accused. On viewing the ADG, the women of the locality registered a complaint that the locality had become a hub for anti-social elements.

The SP said both the accused were identified through CCTV footage and arrested, even as the police were on the lookout for the remaining accused.
